Investigating the correlation between early life exposures and subsequent health outcomes is crucial for the early treatment of various diseases. Here, I introduce an innovative approach to analyze both the metabolome and microbiome data from infant fecal samples. This method demonstrates how specific microbial taxa can induce changes in the chemical composition over time.

In this talk, I discuss how anaerobic bacteria within our gut are capable of ligating amino acids to bile acids via the enzyme bile salt hydrolase, pH dependence of this activity, and important active site residues.

Bile acids are key molecules involved in the digestion of fats and other nutrients. In this talk, I discuss the breadth of microorganisms capable of performing a recently discovered bile acid transformation, microbial conjugation, in addition to the impact of these novel bile acids on microbial growth.
